PENSACOLA - Florida Panhandle children have returned to school even though work is continuing on repairs in many classrooms damaged by two hurricanes in a 10-month span.

Classes resumed at Longleaf Elementary School in Pensacola on Tuesday for the first time since it was battered by Hurricane Ivan in September. Longleaf was the only school in Escambia County unable to reopen before the last school year ended about two months ago.

Most Longleaf pupils were sent to Bellview Elementary School, where double sessions were conducted. Some children also transferred to other schools but they are starting to come back, Longleaf Principal Pat Reynolds said.

"This was a very, very happy day," she said. "We were down to 580 students, and now we're up to 660."

Hurricane Dennis caused additional damage July 10, including at some schools still under repair from Ivan. Many students are being taught in portable classrooms until the work is completed.

Santa Rosa schools opened Monday with about half the classrooms stripped of water-damaged carpeting and tile because of Dennis.
