Kindergarten marks the transition from ''little school'' to ''big school'' for thousands of 5-year-olds starting classes next week across South Florida. To ease those first-day anxieties, we turned to wise veterans who are moving on to first grade.

''What advice do you have for new kindergartners?'' we asked them, only to be met with blank stares.

Advice? What's that? (Apparently it's not part of the playground lexicon.) That's when we decided to get more specific -- and our panel of sage experts came forth with all kinds of good counsel through their toothless smiles.

How is kindergarten different from pre-school?

Alec Altschul, Indian Trace Elementary in Weston: PreK is a baby thing. Kindergarten is not a baby thing.

Brianna Rice, St. Hugh Catholic School in Coconut Grove: It's more grown up.

Amanda Hopkins, Riviera Day School in Coral Gables: It's more about learning. It's fun, but you have to be a tiny bit more serious. You stay until 3 p.m. It was OK. I pretty much had the same fun and I learned more.
