MANATEE - Students in Manatee County need to get better at what you are doing right now.

Reading and improving reading results on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test are two top priorities for the Manatee County school system as the new school year begins Monday.

"Work hard, have fun and make reading No. 1," is the theme Superintendent Roger Dearing has been spreading as he talks to teachers and administrators about the new school year.

Dearing declared raising reading levels would be a focal point for this school year shortly after FCAT scores were released in May.

The FCAT results showed Manatee County students scored below the state average in reading in six of eight grades tested, and below the state average in 14 of 16 areas tested when math scores were included.

The test scores also revealed the reading abilities of county students diminish considerably as they get older.

While 65 percent of Manatee County's third-graders and 71 percent of local fourth-graders tested at grade level in reading, only 34 percent of local ninth-graders and 30 percent of 10th-graders scored at grade level.

Dearing has said that the scores should not be acceptable to parents or teachers and that Manatee's schools need to concentrate on improving students abilities.

To address the problem, district officials hired 48 new reading coaches and 29 new reading teachers for this school year.

In addition, Dearing held a two-day Administrative Academy this summer where school principals and other administrators were exposed to workshops devoted to reaching all students and raising reading proficiency in all grades.
