DESOTO COUNTY -- The first day of school has come and gone. And 170 students and eight teachers at Memorial Elementary School are still waiting to have homerooms.

Eight "relocatable" modular units were scheduled to be installed by July 18, well before school started Aug. 5. Instead, they were finally fully installed on the very day students arrived at school.

Vice President Tom Wagoner of Mobile Modular in Celebration, Fla., said he feels bad about the delay.

"We sincerely regret any inconvenience this situation has caused the school district, their teachers, and especially, their students," Wagoner said.

He blamed the delay on two major factors: the manufacturing process and a great statewide demand for the mobile units.

In an email Wagoner stated, "The major factor was due to the manufacturing process. We purchase all of our buildings from Florida manufacturers, and this year's large demand for buildings caused every manufacturer to be behind schedule on their production. We delivered the buildings to DeSoto County as soon as they were manufactured and immediately sent in an installation crew to complete the job. Had we been able to get the buildings at an earlier date, we would have completed the job earlier."

Wagoner added that modular buildings have been in great demand this summer by Florida school districts.

"Our delivery and installation schedules are based on the date we receive the school district purchase order placing the order," Wagoner said. "The purchase order from the DeSoto County schools was not received until June, and by that time we already had 15 other school systems that had placed orders ahead of the DeSoto County schools."
