Charters are smarter.

That's what an unprecedented number of parents, like Victor Sidberry, are counting on this year.

For the first time in Brevard County School District's history, the majority of newly enrolled students are heading to charter schools. Out of more than 1,000 new students this year, only 369 are going into traditional schools here.

The reason: Parents say charter schools can give their children services and support that traditional public schools cannot.

The tuition-free public schools of choice set their own rules on issues such as curriculum, teaching style, personnel and discipline. In exchange the schools sign contracts with the district pledging to meet academic standards. If they fail to live up to the contract, they can be closed.

"Regular public schools seem to just try to get kids through," Sidberry said. "Charter schools follow a child more, lend themselves to integrated teaching and offer more real-life experiences."

Based on what I know about Brevard schools, the charter schools there are MUCH different from the charter schools here in Pinellas.

I thought about moving to Brevard to teach after my kiddo graduates. It's lightyears beyond PC and their teachers' association fights for teachers. Now that the property values have skyrocketed there as well, I doubt I could ever afford the move.
