TAMPA - Shopping in Hillsborough County could get more expensive, thanks to overcrowded schools.

Hillsborough school officials are considering asking voters to raise the local sales tax a half-cent, enough to raise $80-million a year to pay for new schools and repair old ones.

Such a hike would make Hillsborough's sales tax rate the highest in the Tampa Bay area, and among the most expensive in Florida.

Only consumers in Escambia, Jackson, Leon and Monroe counties now pay the 7.5 percent rate that Hillsborough school officials are pondering. Officials here say they need additional revenue to offset the $364-million building shortfall the school district is facing within five years.

At the heart of the problem is mind-boggling growth. Over the last two decades, enrollment in Hillsborough schools has grown by about 80,000 children to 192,000, making this the nation's ninth-largest school district.
