Charter schools are typically on the receiving end of complaints, criticism and accusations of mishandling their money.

Their proliferation, especially in Palm Beach County, led the school district's audit committee last week to suggest taking a closer look at the people keeping the books at the district's 38 charters — a number that has grown from only three six years ago.

But after the state Department of Education found that at least four school districts may have violated state laws or state Board of Education rules, every charter school in the state was given a chance to share gripes about their school districts.

Of the state's 301 charter schools, 202 replied, and 41 said they have significant problems, including five in Palm Beach County. They complained about everything from school district staff disturbing students during the FCAT reading exams, to not getting their share of the district's property taxes. Many of their complaints were similar to complaints by charters statewide. In a letter to the state, the Palm Beach County School District said many of the allegations charter schools made were the result of misinformation or had already been resolved.
