SARASOTA -- Uncle Sam wants your high schoolers, or at least enough information about them to make recruiting a little easier for the armed forces.

And under federal legislation tied to the No Child Left Behind Act, schools are required to provide military recruiters with basic information: the name, address and telephone numbers of secondary students.

This year, in response to parents' concerns, the Sarasota and Manatee county school districts are making it more obvious that parents can say no and keep their child's information away from recruiters.

As the war in Iraq drags on, more parents are expressing concern that recruiters aren't offering a career or way to pay for college education, but instead a ticket to a war zone.

Michael T. Burns says he has nothing against the armed forces, but he doesn't want them calling his daughter, who is a minor and was barely driving when they contacted her.
