PORT SALERNO — Murray Middle School is undergoing a renovation that doesn't involve bulldozers or construction crews.

The 40-year-old school will soon have construction crews working, but the changes under way at the school are now happening in the classrooms, in the school's attendance policies and in the way teachers are teaching.

"We were trying to teach all children the same way," said Murray Principal Kit Weir. "But you can't, because they all learn differently. We want everyone to succeed."

The school is changing its philosophy to a "single school culture," which means there is a consensus on how the school runs with everyone, teachers and students alike, being on the "same page." The program developed by Alison Aldler is used in schools throughout Florida.

Murray started the program two years ago to tackle frequent student tardiness. Now, the school has "absolutely zero problems with tardiness," Weir said.

This year, the focus is moving into the classroom.

On Monday, Anthony Freddoso, who students call "Mr. Fred," walked around his classroom with book in hand. For about 10 minutes, he read to his eighth-grade class.

He also talked to them and asked them what they thought the characters in the book were thinking.
