Eight-year-old Emily Catalan had trouble tying her shoelaces during technology class at Osceola Elementary School on Tuesday.

She couldn't take her eyes off the giant computer screen — where NetSmartz cartoon pals Nettie and Webster talked Internet safety — long enough to get the laces under control.

Emily and 19 other second-graders barely noticed the mob of media and important adults jammed into the back of teacher Sheri Wiseman's classroom.

The adults arrived to see how the NetSmartz computer program created by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) works. And just how children respond to it.

Judging from the zero-distraction factor NetSmartz is a hit with children.

Tuesday was the kickoff of a communitywide effort to cast a virtual safety net over Collier County's 55,000 public and private schoolchildren by teaching them how to avoid sexual predators online.
