Okeechobee County teachers and non-instructional or classified workers have approved new three-year contracts.
Voting was held Monday, Aug. 15. Teachers voted to approve their new contract by a margin of 2-to-1. Of those teachers eligible to vote, 84 percent participated in the election.
The margin of acceptance for the classified contract was even higher at 92 percent. However, only 47 percent of eligible classified employees voted.
The Okeechobee County Education Association expressed pleasure with the results of the voting in a press release issued by that group.
The next step in implementing the new contract is ratification by the Okeechobee County School Board. That action is expected to take place at the board's meeting on Aug. 16.
Teachers and classified workers are currently working under the terms of a contract that expired June 30.
The proposed contracts are the result of a bargaining process that began June 1. School board and union representatives met several times before coming to an agreement on Aug. 5.
The proposed teacher's contract would have first-year teachers earning $31,400. The highest any teacher would earn is $51,500. There is also a $2,000 supplement for teachers with master's degrees. Those with specialist degrees would earn an extra $3,000. A teacher with a doctorate would earn an additional $4,000. At the present time, there are no teachers in the system with a doctorate.
