(Opinion)

School is back in session.

I can always tell, because the school buses go from 0 to 60 in three seconds after they stop, so no car behind them can pass.

Seeing the buses prompted me to muse about children going to school. The issues that faced my parents and me when we went back to school were nothing compared to what children face today as they trudge off to school.

In my parents' day, the concern was whether they were they going to get a job upon graduation and keep it until they retired. It would be a nice blue-collar job somewhere that would keep a roof over their heads for life.

In my day, the question was whether I was going to go to college to get a nice white-collar job that would prepare me for a better job down the line. Maybe there would be an even better one after that until I retired.

Now, graduation is secondary to just getting through the day. The myriad problems in just surviving the day, much less worrying about something like graduation, which could be years away, is cause for celebration.

Before they go off to school, today's students have to check the car, pant's pockets and backpack to make sure there are no nail clippers, pen knives or leftover spoons from snacks in them. You don't want the teachers to think you're Jim Bowie.

Make sure you are extra-nice and always say "good morning" when you get on the bus and "have a good day" when you get off the bus. You don't want any trouble with the bus driver if he is having a bad day.

Is the skirt long enough? You may not be really happy with the color, but all the other skirts met last year's standard and they are now too short.

You have to make sure you don't look anyone in the eye today. You don't want to get stabbed, like the student who was knifed because she looked cross-eyed at another student in the mall. It's raining, but maybe sunglasses should be worn.
