PENSACOLA - School officials said they believe hurricanes are at least partly to blame for declining enrollment in two Panhandle counties that could cost them more than $1 million in state funding and lead to teacher layoffs.

Escambia County, which includes Pensacola, has enrolled 41,500 students, down by 658 from last year, or 1.6 percent. Neighboring Santa Rosa County is down by 215 students to 24,909, a 0.9 percent decline.

Both counties were struck by Hurricane Ivan last September and Hurricane Dennis on July 10.

Escambia school officials said some of the greatest enrollment drops have been in areas hardest hit by the hurricanes.

"I think a lot of people have sent their children to Aunt Mary in Atlanta," said Escambia School Superintendent Jim Paul. "One child was sent to Maine to live with a sister. Some sent their child to a private school."

Poor grades that Escambia's schools have received from the state may be another factor in its enrollment drop.
