With school districts facing declining enrollment, reduced state funding, and rising costs for insurance, electricity and diesel fuel, sports programs are facing a budget crisis many longtime coaches say is the worst they have lived through.

It means more fundraisers and tighter belts for programs that had already become mostly self-sufficient.

"We don't expect the school district to fund our programs," said Bob McCullough, Lyman's 36-year baseball coach. "We have to generate that money, and we understand that. That's part of the game."

A big-ticket item school systems do pay out is supplementary coaching pay. But, when considered individually, those numbers are small. In Seminole County, a head football coach makes $3,534 and an assistant $2,494 for a season that stretches through spring practice and summer workouts. The pay is $2,704 for a girls softball head coach and $1,872 for a girls volleyball head coach. Here is a look at the sports situations Central Florida districts are wrestling with:
