BRADENTON -- State GOP leaders met with local Republicans on Tuesday to push for support on an amendment they say is critical to Florida's economy.
Former state Sen. President John McKay and Rep. Ron Reagan urged members of the Manatee Republican Women's Forum to vote for Amendment 5 on Nov. 6.
The amendment proposes to eliminate the state required school property taxes and replace the $8 billion it generates by increasing the sales tax, eliminating sales tax exemptions and cutting other state spending.
If it passes, the amendment would take effect in 2010 and would reduce overall property taxes by about 25 percent.
