Florida again pushed thousands of high school students into the ACT college readiness test last year – and again saw its average scores fall, according to a national report (http://www.act.org/news/data.html) released this morning.

The number of Florida students taking the test rose to 105,297, up from 93,884 last year. The average composite score dropped from 19.8 to 19.5. The national average, 21.1, remained unchanged.

Florida now ranks No. 22 in the percentage of graduates tested, at 62 percent, up from No. 26 last year.

It ranks No. 48 (same as last year) in average composite score, just ahead of Kentucky and Mississippi and behind Alabama, Louisiana and Tennessee. All of those states have a bigger proportion of students taking the ACT.

Another sad stat: Only 15 percent of Florida kids who took the ACT met all four college readiness benchmarks (in English, math, reading and science).08/florida-act-scores-fall-again.html
