Duval County Public Schools has reduced its travel budget by nearly a third — from $1.6 million to $1.1 million for the 2009-10 school year — after board members questioned the necessity of the travel expenses.

Board member Stan Jordan had asked the board in August to restrict travel to only $300,000, but members wanted to first discuss the issue in a workshop before making a decision. The travel expense reduction was announced in a memo to board members this week.

“I’m pleased that we’re moving in the right direction,” Jordan said. “I’m still not satisfied that we’ve done all we can do.”

Now he says he would like to see the expenses under $900,000 for the school year.
Board Chairman Tommy Hazouri said, “while travel is an easy target in any governmental entity, you always want to be prudent … when it comes to teacher training.

“If the superintendent is recommending this and feels comfortable that this is what we need to continue professional development … then the board will probably recommend that,” Hazouri continued.
